Long before the settlers came to this town it was used heavily by the Native American people - the Chinook used the ocean end of the point as a place to store food they gathered and before them the Chehalis Indians had a camp at the beginning of the point; among other tribes. To this day there are still a large number of Native Americans that reside in this part of the country - approximately 20 miles north of Ocean Shores is Taholah, home to the Confederated Tribes of the Quinault Indian Nation. This nation is the combination of the different tribes that once settled in this area.
Ocean Shores was quickly becoming the place for the jet set to go, so the SS Catala was brought up from California to be used as a charter fleet office. Two years later a winter storm drove it into the sand. Parts of the shipwreck can still be seen at the end of Damon Point. The SS Catala is still one of the most famous shipwrecks on the Washington coast.
With 120 miles of picturesque roadways, this is the perfect place to bring your bikes for a relaxing sojourn. Cycle your way from one side of the peninsula to the other, stopping to appreciate the sites normally missed in a car. Most of the major roads have marked bike lanes for your safety.
Ocean Shores is a fantastic place for bird watching and the Audubon Society has written books about the birds in this area. Damon Point State Park (also known as Protection Island) is very popular and is one of the only known nesting sites for the Snowy Plover. There are over 300 different species of birds including brown pelicans, peregrine falcons, herons, quail and pheasant.
Ocean Shores has 3 parks open to the public. They are all located in the northern section of town, on or near Duck Lake. Chinook Park is on the Lake and has a boat launch and fishing pier for freshwater fishing. This park does have special facilities for the handicapped. North Bay Park is the largest of the parks and is also on the lake. It has a public boat launch and fishing pier, but there is also a tennis court, a baseball field and large playground for the kids. North Bay also has a picnic shelter and restrooms which makes it a wonderful place for family functions and reunions. The smallest is Emerson Park it is also the closest to the downtown area. It has a tennis court and play area.

Harborites ready to cry fowl this weekend Thousands of birds swirling in the air; whole flocks shimmering from white bellies to dark backs as they turn with the wind. "It's an amazing thing," says Dianna Moore. Moore, the registrar for the Grays Harbor Shorebird Festival, reports that the migratory flocks are back out on the local mudflats - right on schedule. The 13th annual festival will kick off at 8 a.m. Friday in Hoquiam.
Buildup of sand sinks Harbor ferry OCEAN SHORES-Tourists looking for a scenic shortcut between Westport and Ocean Shores this summer are out of luck. The buildup of sand and silt in the Ocean Shores Marina has caused the passenger ferry linking the two cities to close.
